We are developing a range of alternative power solutions.

Prior Power Solutions is committed to developing cleaner diesel and alternative power products to support customers transition to greener power sources. Alternative power refers to any power source that does not use fossil fuels such as oil or gas.


Prior Power Solutions is looking at different approaches to utilising hydrogen as a power source. Working with Manchester Metropolitan University, research is underway to develop traditional diesel engines with hydrogen injected to significantly reduce overall emission levels. This is also known as cleaner diesel technology.

Additionally, we are developing hydrogen fuel cell technology, again with Manchester Metropolitan University and the Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre (MFCIC). A fuel cell is an electrochemical cell that converts the chemical energy of hydrogen and oxygen from the air into electricity through a pair of redox reactions. Fuel cells differ from most batteries in that a continuous source of fuel (hydrogen) and oxygen to maintain the chemical reaction.

Hydrogen has the environmental advantage of being a completely clean burning fuel. When in use, hydrogen fuel cells only emit water vapour and warm air.

Alternative Power


Prior Power Solutions is integrating the latest low emission diesel engines using cleaner diesel technology into the equipment we manufacture. State-of-the-art technology reduces emissions into the environment with added fuel efficiency and reduction offering users cost savings.

CE regulations state that Stage V engines should now be used.

Prior Power Solutions also offers products aimed at reducing emissions such as Selective Catalyst Reaction (SCR) and Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF).


Prior Power Solutions is developing electric motors that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The majority of electric motors operate through the interaction between a motor’s magnetic field and electric current in a wire winding to generate force in the form of torque applied on the motor’s shaft.


We are also committed to research and development into hybrid power systems. Hybrid power comprises of combinations of different technologies to produce power. In power engineering, the term ‘hybrid’ describes a combined power and energy storage system.


Work is being undertaken at Prior Power Solutions to design and manufacture gas engines.

A gas engine is an internal combustion engine that runs on a gaseous fuel such as natural gas, landfill gas or biogas. Typically, gas engines are heavy-duty industrial engines capable of running continuously at full load for periods approaching a high fraction of 8,760 hours per year compared with gasoline car engines which are lightweight, high-revving and normally run for no more than 4,000 hours over their lifespan.

Typical power ranges from 10kW (13hp) to 4MW (5,364hp).
